Marjoram and oregano are both of the Origanum species, which is why oregano is sometimes also known as wild marjoram. They are aromatic herbs with a savoury/spicey flavour which varies a little between varieties, however marjoram tends to be sweeter than oregano. They have long been part of Mediterranean culture, not only in cuisine but also in ceremonies, such as weddings and funerals, to bring joy and happiness.
The herb has remarkable anti-oxidant and anti-microbial properties. It can be used as a culinary addition or infused as a herb tea, and can be beneficial for exhaustion, irritability, colds, headaches, menstrual issues, and gastro-intestinal and gallbladder disorders. Fresh marjoram or a few drops of essential oil can be added to bath water to promote relaxation and to help relieve muscular and joint pains.If using the herb in cooking, it is best added at the end of the cooking process to maintain its best aroma and taste.
